Janis Joplin, famous blues singer and Rock and roll's first female superstar. Janis Joplin showed that women could be rock singers. Her star still shines as brightly as ever as new generations hear her incendiary performances through her timeless recordings.

Scott Joplin, African American composer
and pianist is called the "King of Ragtime". His syncopated rhythms changed popular music conceptions forever, and may be attributed to beginning a truly original American musical sensibility.
